Colombia is the number one country with the largest bird species in the world, allowing to enjoy more than 1920 species of birds, of which 79 are endemic and 193 are almost endemic, the country is located in North South America and has a variety of thermal floors that range from 0 m.a.s.l. to 5300 m.a.s.l, passing through dry tropical forest to paramo areas.

This route allows you to observe, photograph and appreciate a combination of wonderful landscapes, sounds of birds, wildlife, you will find variety of climates; as well as you can see endemic birds of different states to visit. This tour includes the departments of Cesar, Magdalena and Guajira, where you can see about 500 species, from beach and sea birds in the Caribbean, to birds of wet and dryforests, this being last a forest of vulnerability and the threatened most of our territory, currently there is only 8% preserved in our country.

 

Note: Please note that your migration step may take between 30 minutes to an hour, if you want to exchange dollars, this must be done at the airport on arrival. ATMs are perhaps the easiest place to get Colombian pesos.

Day 0: Arrival in Barranquilla

Pick up at Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport -translate to Hotel Barranquilla, this will be the day of your arrival in Colombia, will be picked up at Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport in the city of Barranquilla in the afternoon hours, recommendation of arrival time 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Together with the leading guide will revise Check List and the itinerary of the trip, coexistence agreements and recommendations will be made, all doubts will be resolved on this day. There we will rest tonight, to start the next day with the itinerary of the trip.   Meals: Dinner. Overnight at Holiday Inn Express, Barranquilla.

Day 1: Salamanca Island Park

Early in the morning you will move to Salamanca Island Park located about an hour and a half from Barranquilla, we will move at 6:00 a.m. Salamanca Island Park allows you to contemplate mangrove forests, swamps and exceptional beaches; was declared an area of Importance for Bird Conservation (AICA in spanish),the island of Salamanca is an aggregate of small islands formed by accumulation of sediments from the Magdalena delta, on the bottom of an ancient bay, communicated by small canals, they integrate a barrier that separates the Large Swamp of Santa Marta from the Caribbean Sea. There we will be watching and photographing birds until noon, after lunch, we will head towards Minca, to enjoy the next 3 days in Minca, we will rest this day in Minca Ecohabs, the tour is about 2 hours from Salamanca Island. The temperature in Salamanca Island is about 28 °C to 6 m.s.a.l. Possible species: Sapphire-bellied Hummingbird (endemic and critically endangered), Bare-eyed Pigeon, Willet, Bicolored Conebill, Reddish Egret, Great Blue Heron, Sapphire-throated Hummingbird, Shining-green Hummingbird, Greater Yellowlegs, among others. Day 2: Minca, Ecohabs

On this day there will be a tour to watch the birds of the municipality of Minca, more specifically we will be birding on the trails and in points around the reserve where we are staying, there we will be all day appreciating the birds that live in this place; we will rest in the same hotel as the night before. The temperature in Minca is about 25 °C and you can feel a humidity of 60% to 650 m.s.a.l. Day 3: Minca, Ecohabs – Dorado reserve

On this day there will be a tour to watch the birds of the municipality of Minca, more specifically we will be birding along all the road leading to the el Dorado reserve, we will have lunch on the way and at the end of the afternoon we will arrive towards the reserve to rest. Day 4: Minca, Dorado Reserve

On this day we'll keep looking the birds of the municipality of Minca, more specifically you will go to the Cuchilla of San Lorenzo making stops along the way. You will take breakfast to eat on the way, the tour will start at 7 a.m. you will have lunch at noon and you will continue with the tour until you reach the el Dorado reservation; there we can continue to observe birds and rest for the activity of the next day. The Cuchilla of San Lorenzo, is located on the north-western slope of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, it is located in  a  premontane area within an altitude gradient of 600 to 2200 m.s.a.l., and a territory rich in water resources  and in which seven rivers of great importance for the Magdalena region are born. The temperature in San Lorenzo is about 22 °C. Day 5 Minca, Dorado Reserve

This day will be used to stay all day in the reserve, this place has  a high number of endemic species of fauna and flora threatened with extinction; in addition, the preserved forests benefit the three species of birds most threatened in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta: Santa Marta Parakeet (Pyrrhura viridicata), Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant (Myiotheretes pernix) y Santa Marta Sabrewing (Campylopterus phainopeplus); so, visiting and enjoying it in a sustainable way, allows the place to be preserved and work itself to make every day a better place for animals as well as plants. The temperature in Dorado Reserve is about 18 °C to 2600 m.s.a.l. At the end of the afternoon of this day, we will head towards the city of Riohacha, where we will rest in a very comfortable hotel. Day 6 Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna the Flamingos

On this day the bird watching and photography will be held in the Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna Los Flamencos in Camarones, department of the Guajira, the displacement has a time of about half hour, you'll go out there at 6:00 a.m., in Camarones, the tour of the Sanctuary will be made, locating the bird in the ideal points according to the guide indicates, also, a special place will be visited where you can observe very closely in the feeder the cardinal. There at the Sanctuary you will have lunch near the beach, also, you will watch shorebirds and enter others. The bird activity will be carried out until 5:00 p.m. after that, you will have an activity of interaction with the indigenous and original communities of this region, where they will show part of their culture through dances and food; after that we will head towards the municipality of Riohacha, to rest in the hotel. Day 7 Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna the Flamingos

On this day we will continue to carry out the activity of bird watching and photography in the Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna the Flamingos in Camarones around the morning, after taking lunch, we will head towards Valledupar to rest from the tour in a comfortable hotel, the tour is about 4 hours. The temperature in Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna the Flamingos is about 27 °C to 5 m.s.a.l. Day 8 Serrania of Perijá

On this day we will move to the Serrania del Perijá, a very spicy place locatedor in the municipality of Manaure in the Cesar, being this a "neighbor" of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta; the eastern mountain range, is an area of very high biological wealth since it marks an important stretch of the border between Colombia and Venezuela; that's where we'll go on the tour and visit places to watch important species; our destination is the Nature Reserve of birds Chamicero of Perijá; where we will stay one night, but we will enjoy the two days, on the 20th and 21st, in addition, we will go to the moor in search of other important species. This protected area presents magnificent landscapes distributed throughout the entire altitude gradient ranging from 1500 meters to almost 3000 meters, where the habitat of the moor still intact, provides water sources to the inhabitants of Cesar; the area has an average temperature of 15 °C. Mid-afternoon from this day we will go to the Nature Reserve of birds Chamicero of Perijá, there we will take the lunch and settle down to stay that night there and continue to enjoy the birds of this place. Possible species: Perija Brushfinch (Endemic), Yellow-breasted Brushfinch (Endemic ssp), Perija Metaltail (Endemic), Perija Tapaculo (Endemic), Perija Thistletail (Endemic), White-browed Spinetail, Rufous-shafted Woodstar, Golden-breasted Fruiteater, Black-fronted Wood-Quail, Tyrian Metaltail, Yellow-throated Toucan, Streaked Tuftedcheek. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and fruits at different times of the day. Overnight at the Nature Reserve of birds Chamicero  of Perijá, Serrania of Perijá.

Day 9 Nature Reserve of Birds Chamicero of Perijá

On this day we will enjoy the Serrania del Perijá and the reserve where we stay, the reserve protects subtropical forests (fog) from the sub-Andean and Andean strips, sub moors (2600-2900 m.s.a.l.) and moors (3000-3500 m.s.a.l.). Sub-Andean forests are mainly found between 1700-2300 m.s.a.l. 2,300 m.s.a.l. It should be clarified that we will visit part of the paramo, so, the temperature as you ascend towards it will decrease. Possible species: Perija Brushfinch (Endemic), Yellow-breasted Brushfinch (Endemic ssp), Perija Metaltail (Endemic), Perija Tapaculo (Endemic), Perija Thistletail (Endemic), White-browed Spinetail, Rufous-shafted Woodstar, Golden-breasted Fruiteater, Black-fronted Wood-Quail, Tyrian Metaltail, Yellow-throated Toucan, Streaked Tuftedcheek. Mid-afternoon of this day we will head to Valledupar to rest and end the amazing tour. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and fruits at different times of the day. Day 10: Flight back to home

On this day we will head to Valledupar Airport to take flight around 11 a.m. bound for Dorado International Airport and take the flight back to home. Meals: Breakfast.
